Get Your Northern Colorado Home Ready for Winter
Northern Colorado winters bring cold snaps, wind and big temperature swings. A few upgrades and checkups this fall can make your home more comfortable and help keep energy bills in check.
Service your furnace or heat pump
Have your system inspected and cleaned before the first deep freeze, and replace the filter. If your furnace is older or struggling, ask about high-efficiency furnaces and cold-climate heat pumps.
Seal drafts and add insulation
Attics are often the biggest source of heat loss. Ask an insulation pro about air sealing and adding insulation, and weatherstrip doors and windows.
Look at your windows
Older windows can let in drafts and frost up. Energy-efficient replacement windows can make rooms more comfortable year-round.
Protect pipes and check the water heater
Disconnect hoses, insulate exposed pipes and have your water heater checked.
Clean gutters and check the roof
Clear gutters before snow and ice arrive, and have any hail or wind damage repaired.
Ask about rebates
Your utility (such as Xcel Energy, Loveland Water and Power or Fort Collins Utilities) may offer rebates on furnaces, heat pumps, insulation and more. Check their current programs before you buy.
Meet the pros in one place
Heating, insulation, window and roofing companies will all be at the Northern Colorado Home Show, January 22–24 at The Ranch Events Complex in Loveland.
